Teragren Bamboo Products Overview
Teragren Bamboo Stair Parts Program
General Description
Vertical grain or flat grain panels in solid-stock or cross-ply, and strand panels with Xcora™ technology.
Teragren bamboo panels lend simple elegance to custom furniture and cabinetry. They offer the custom woodworker a wide variety of grains to complement any décor or project, from the serene consistency of vertical grain or the subtle interruptions of nodes in flat grain panels to the interplay of natural and caramelized fibers in our strand bamboo panels. Strand panels are made with Xcora™ technology for greater hardness, durability and stability. All panels machine nicely, finish cleanly. They are all unfinished except the 1' x 6' x 5/8" panel which has a water-based, solvent-free finish.
Environmental Description
All panels machine nicely, finish cleanly and won't harm your work or home environment because the manufacturing adhesives are either formaldehyde-free (selected products now in stock) or emit less formaldehyde than allowed by U.S. OSHA, European E0, CARB Phase 1 and Phase 2 and Japanese JIS/JAS (F****) emissions standards. All are unfinished except the 1' x 6' x 5/8" panel which has a water-based, solvent-free finish.
LEED® Credit
MR 6: Rapidly Renewing Materials—QUALIFIES
Teragren products qualify because they are made with Optimum 5.5 Moso bamboo, a rapidly renewable resource
EQ 4.4: Low-Emitting Materials—STRAND AND SPECIAL-ORDER PRODUCTS QUALIFY
Strand panels qualify; other panels are available manufactured with a LEED® EQ 4.4-compliant formaldehyde-free adhesive. Select products are in stock or by special order only
Does FSC-certified bamboo qualify for LEED Credits, specifically MR Credit 7: Certified Wood?
Yes. FSC-certified bamboo now qualifies for U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED MR Credit 7: Certified Wood.
Is Teragren bamboo FSC certified?
The certification is pending. Since bamboo is technically not a tree but a grass, it hasn't been included among FSC's standards held for tree forests. Only recently has the FSC's set of standards been expanded to include Moso bamboo forests.

Vertical grain
Type of construction in which the bamboo strips are laminated with edges exposed as the wear surface to form a solid bamboo plank with no internal voids. Vertical grain bamboo has minimal pattern, with no visible nodes.
Flat grain
Type of construction in which bamboo slats are laminated face up to form a three-ply solid plank with no internal voids. The resulting look is one of long slats subtly broken by a pattern of nodes. Also called horizontal grain.
Strand bamboo
A patented construction method in which fibers of semi-shredded bamboo are intertwined in a pressure-treated adhesive base to form a high-density, homogenous bamboo plank without internal voids. As used in Teragren Synergy™ strand bamboo flooring with Xcora™ technology, fibers may be all natural colored (Wheat) or all caramelized (Chestnut), or dramatic combinations of fibers such as the light and dark caramelized fibers of the Java color or the natural and caramelized fibers of the Brindle color. Strand panels are available in coordinating colors.
Color Options
Natural (vertical or flat grain)
Caramelized (vertical or flat grain)
Wheat (natural strand)
Chestnut (caramelized strand)
Java (blended light and dark caramelized strand)
Brindle (blended natural and caramelized strand)
Physical Properties
Optimum 5.5® Moso bamboo - Teragren exclusive
For Teagren bamboo products, they specify only Teragren Optimum 5.5 Moso bamboo grown in the Zhejiang province of China. There are more than 1,500 species of bamboo and moso (Phyllostachys pubescens) is among the hardest, with dense fibers that make for strong timber and beautiful, durable bamboo flooring, panels and veneer. Bamboo has greater compressive strength than concrete and about the same strength-to-weight ratio as steel in tension. But it doesn't start out that way. To achieve the characteristics valued in construction material, it must be harvested at the right time, between 5-1/2 and 6 years.
Hardness measured by the Janka Ball Test
The hardness of bamboo that is key to durability is established by the Janka ball test. The Janka ball test measures the force required to embed in the wood a .444-inch steel ball to a depth of half the ball's diameter. Teragren Signature Naturals flooring averages a Janka rating of 1921. By comparison, white oak registers 1360, North American maple, 1450. Teragren Synergy™ strand bamboo flooring with Xcora™ technology, made with our optimized manufacturing process, is rated at 3271. (View hardwood hardness comparison chart.)
Bamboo is more resistant to moisture than hardwoods. In products like bamboo flooring, that means less contraction and expansion with changes in moisture—during installation and throughout the life of the floor, even in humid or dry climates.
Moso bamboo timber has been used in construction for thousands of years. In Asia, homes, bridges and multi-story scaffolding are made of moso timber. In South American earthquake zones, bamboo has been used to build thousands of homes because its flexural strength helps the homes withstand temblors. Plywood made from moso performs well as flooring for truck beds, trains and containers. Other uses of moso bamboo include furniture, beds, mats, chopsticks, baskets, musical instruments and handicrafts.
